No William Wallace… No Scottish Borders

Why is there a Wallace statue in the Borders? Because without Wallace, there’d be no Border clans, no frontier to defend — no Scottish Borders as we know them. His defiance shaped this land. This monument above Bemersyde isn’t just scenic — it’s sentinel.

A man stands in silence beneath the towering statue of William Wallace, gazing out over the rolling hills of the Scottish Borders. The air is still, but the land speaks — of battles, borders, and a bravery that still echoes through time.

This enormous statue of Wallace, built in 1836, towers over the Borders landscape like a sentinel. Before Mel Gibson and Braveheart, before Hollywood made him a pop culture icon, Scotland already remembered him as a hero — a man who refused to kneel before Edward I and inspired a nation to rise.

But Why Wallace… and Why Here?

Why is there a statue of William Wallace here in the Scottish Borders? Why not just in the Central Belt or further north?

Because without Wallace… there would be no Borders. No Reivers. No Kerrs, no Scotts, no Douglases holding these valleys and ridges for Scotland. It was his resistance that shaped the boundary we now call the border.

Wallace didn’t just fight for Stirling or Falkirk. His defiance rippled all the way down to the Cheviots and Liddesdale. The monument on that hill isn’t just decorative — it watches the English line, the old frontier he guarded so fiercely.

A Forgotten Hero?

It’s a strange thing. In modern Scotland, Wallace is whispered more than shouted. We commemorate victories against Germany in WWII — rightly so. But our historic resistance against England? It’s often treated as taboo.

Apart from this grand statue near Bemersyde and a modest figure at the gates of Edinburgh Castle, there’s little public celebration of Wallace. No parades, few plaques, and rare recognition.

Yet if we forget Wallace… what else do we forget?

800 Years On… We Still Salute You Wallace

Whether you’re a Borderer with a name like Armstrong, Elliot, Pringle or Scott — or simply someone who loves this land and its layered past — this statue is a reminder.

That once, a man said no to tyranny. And because he did, this land remained Scotland.

“When will we see your like again?”
