Mark Nicol

Historian · Filmmaker · Blogger · Guided Tours · Group Speaker

The person in front of the lens, the questions and the journey into the story.

Mark’s work starts with a simple instinct: go and look more closely.

Discover Scottish Borders was created and is hosted by Mark Nicol as an independent platform exploring the heritage, legends, landscapes and wildlife of the Anglo-Scottish Borderlands. His films combine historical research with the feeling of being there — walking towards a ruin, finding a forgotten road, standing above a town or following a story into the hills.

When Mark explores a Border family name, he follows the written histories and local tales of its notable characters, bringing their world and its surviving landmarks into view. His work offers a wider historical setting for those surnames; it does not include tracing individual family trees or undertaking personal genealogy research.

The project grew from local exploration and video diaries made with curiosity, humour and personality. When the Borders Railway was nearing completion, Mark created a series for visitors arriving at Galashiels and Tweedbank, bringing local walks, landmarks and hidden places into view for audiences far beyond the region.

Today the project is presented as a collection of 300 researched videos alongside blog writing, social streams, tours and group speaking. The work has led to collaborations, private tours and a feature segment on BBC Scotland. In 2018, Mark was a finalist for the Visit Scotland Scottish Thistle Award as a Regional Ambassador.

It remains a personal project, made in spare time and days off, driven by a deep affection for the Borders and a belief that local history becomes more powerful when it is made accessible, visual and human.

The field of view

A wide Borderlands lens.

Mark’s work moves between the modern Scottish Borders and the broader historical geography around it — from Roxburghshire and Berwickshire to Dumfriesshire, Northumberland, Cumberland and Westmorland.

Roman and ancient Borders

Forts, altars, standing stones and the traces left by people who lived here long before the modern boundary.

Border Reivers and conflict

Families, feuds, battles, castles and the difficult identities forged along the Anglo-Scottish frontier.

Hidden places and folklore

Caves, wells, lost sites, local legends and the moments when landscape and story begin to overlap.

People, towns and memory

Galashiels, Melrose, Peebles and the wider Border communities whose history is still carried in everyday places.

Selected fieldwork

Stories that keep opening new doors.

Across the archive, a Roman altar can lead to folklore, a cave can lead to a Border legend, and a town’s memory can reveal much more than its official history.

The Only Scottish Town in England

In this thought-provoking exploration, a visit to Berwick-upon-Tweed—often called the only Scottish town in England—uncovers layers of history, identity, and forgotten heritage embedded in its stones. Once a flashpoint in centuries of Anglo-Scottish conflict, Berwick still echoes with the legacy of Wallace, Bruce, and Edward I.

Wars & Conflict The Borderlands

No William Wallace… No Scottish Borders

Why is there a Wallace statue in the Borders? Because without Wallace, there’d be no Border clans, no frontier to defend — no Scottish Borders as we know them. His defiance shaped this land. This monument above Bemersyde isn’t just scenic — it’s sentinel.
