It’s not the Scottish Borders but this is highlights of our recent tour of the Isle of Skye and Loch Ness!   If you are visiting Scottish Borders why not pop up to the Highlands for a day or 2. Nobody ever thinks to visit Skye or Loch Ness but it’s outstandingly beautiful up there too

We love the Scottish Borders—its quiet magic, rich history, and ancient landscapes—but every now and then, it’s worth heading a little further north.

This post is a wee detour from our usual Borders-based adventures. We’re sharing the stunning highlights from a recent trip to Loch Ness and the Isle of Skye, two of Scotland’s most iconic and breathtaking destinations.

Loch Ness: More Than a Monster

Famous for Nessie, yes—but Loch Ness is so much more than the legend. The loch itself is mysterious, vast, and deep, stretching 23 miles through the heart of the Highlands.

Driving the length of Loch Ness, you’re surrounded by rolling hills, dense forest, and the occasional castle ruin—Urquhart Castle being the most dramatic, perched on the shore with views that stop you in your tracks.

Even in mist or drizzle, the atmosphere is electric. There’s something timeless and ancient in the air.

The Isle of Skye: A World Apart

From Loch Ness, we carried on to Skye—one of the wildest, most photogenic places in the country. Cliffs, waterfalls, and sea lochs everywhere you look.

Highlights included:

  • The Quiraing – jagged, cinematic, and otherworldly.

  • Old Man of Storr – an iconic rocky spire that rises like a sentinel from the land.

  • Fairy Pools – crystal-clear waters flowing through rocky cascades.

  • And the ever-changing skies above—it felt like the weather turned every 15 minutes, each scene more dramatic than the last.

Just a Day (or Two) Away

If you’re already visiting the Scottish Borders, why not add on a trip to the Highlands? It’s a bit of a drive, yes—but the journey is part of the experience.

You’ll pass through the Cairngorms, over moors and through glens, catching glimpses of deer and eagles along the way. And when you arrive? Pure Scottish magic.

Final Thoughts

Skye and Loch Ness may not be part of the Borders, but they’re part of Scotland’s heart. These places remind us how diverse this country really is—from quiet Border forts to jagged island cliffs.

So if you’re visiting the Borders… consider making the leap. Because there’s something extraordinary waiting in the north.
