In late February 2018, the phrase Beast from the East was everywhere. The cold spell changed ordinary journeys and filled the landscape with snow. Mark's film responds with humour and his own strange winter visions rather than a straight weather report.

It belongs to a moment when the Borders felt transformed. Familiar roads and hills can become another world in snow, but this is also a playful film: let the joke lead you through it.

A different view of winter

The winter landscape is part of the appeal of Mark's archive. So is his willingness to step outside a formal history lesson and show the personality behind the camera.

For a quieter seasonal view, watch a first flurry in the Border hills or winter wildlife on the Tweed.
