From Peniel Heugh, the Waterloo Monument rises above the Roxburghshire countryside. Mark's Short uses the tower and the Eildon Hills beyond it to show how two familiar landmarks can share one sweeping view.

The monument commemorates the Battle of Waterloo. Its presence on the hill turns a distant European battle into a local landmark, while the Eildons carry much older layers of Borders history. You can hold both in a single glance.

A view across centuries

The first tower on Peniel Heugh collapsed during construction; the rebuilt monument was completed in the 1820s. The short film is about the view rather than a full architectural history, but it may make you notice the tower the next time it appears on the horizon.

Explore the Eildon Hills above the fog and ancient life on the Eildons.
