Privacy & cookiesNorham Castle stands beside the Tweed where the river has long marked a contested frontier. Mark's provocative title asks whether this was once the most dangerous place in England. It is a question designed to make us look again at a ruin whose quiet setting can conceal centuries of sieges.
The castle was a major stronghold of the bishops of Durham and repeatedly faced Scottish attacks. Its place in the wars makes the question understandable, though most dangerous is a storyteller's challenge rather than a historical ranking.
A stronghold on the Tweed
Norham's position mattered because the crossing, river and routes through the eastern Borders mattered. Robert the Bruce besieged the castle; later conflicts returned to the same walls. The Short offers a glimpse of the setting that made the fortress so important.
For another nearby layer of that history, watch Norham Church and explore Berwick-upon-Tweed.
