Privacy & cookiesWhich is better Scottish Borders or Scottish Highlands?
We are not biased in any way?
Location: Scottish Highlands
In part two of my Highland Tour, I’m venturing further into the heart of the Scottish Highlands – dramatic peaks, vast lochs, and postcard-perfect glens. It’s no surprise this region is world-famous.
But as a proud Borderer… I’ve got to ask:
Which is better – the Scottish Highlands or the Scottish Borders?
(We’re definitely not biased… right? )
Let’s break it down.
The Highlands: Big, Bold & Beautiful
There’s no denying it — the Highlands are stunning.
Jagged mountains rise out of nowhere. Waterfalls tumble down sheer rock faces. Every bend in the road reveals another “wow” moment.
It’s epic. It’s wild. And it’s busy. Very busy.
Coach tours, queues for photos, drone squads, and “No Campervan Parking” signs galore. It feels a bit like a theme park in some spots, even in the more remote glens.
The Borders: Subtle, Serene & Steeped in Story
Now compare that with the Borders…
We may not have Ben Nevis, but we’ve got the Eildon Hills, Cheviots, Ettrick Forest, and rolling moorlands that stretch for miles. And the best part?
You can walk all day and not meet a soul.
Accessible solitude — that’s what we’ve got in spades.
And let’s not forget the history.
We’ve got Border Reiver towers, Roman forts, hillforts, brochs, ancient abbeys, and battlefields. The Highlands might give you grandeur — but the Borders gives you layers of stories under every footstep.
Wildlife & Wild Places
In the Highlands, you might see a deer or two if you’re lucky (and not too loud).
In the Borders? It’s alive with wildlife — roe deer, badgers, buzzards, owls, ospreys, hares, herons — and it’s all right there, not just on the leaflets.
Hillwalking Without the Hassle
Let’s be honest — not everyone wants to scale a Munro.
The Borders offers hillwalking for all levels, with incredible views and none of the altitude sickness.
And midges?
We barely know them.
So, Which is Better?
We’ll leave that to you to decide… but let’s just say this:
-
The Highlands are dramatic, cinematic, awe-inspiring.
-
The Borders are authentic, peaceful, historic — and totally underrated.
If you’re after bucket list bragging rights, head north.
But if you want to walk in the footsteps of warriors, poets, monks, and rebels — come south.
