Mark decides to attack Hadrian's Wall. Fortunately for everyone, its days as an active Roman military frontier are long past. The Short plays with the idea of confronting a monument that now draws visitors rather than an opposing army.

Under the joke is a remarkable survival. The Wall still crosses northern England, with forts, milecastles and remains of a much larger frontier system. It was a place where people lived, worked, traded and moved as well as a line watched by soldiers.

Beyond the joke

The Roman story did not stop at the Wall. Roads and forts extended north into the wider Borderlands, including places Mark investigates elsewhere in the archive.

Continue with the Romans from Hadrian's Wall to Peebles and Bremenium beyond the Wall.
