On the evening of the Summer Solstice, 2019, I grabbed my camera, left Galashiels behind, and made a spontaneous climb up Eildon Hill North. No plan, no script — just the instinctive pull to witness the sunset on the longest day of the year from one of the Borders’ most iconic hills.
🏞 The Climb
The path was steep — very steep. But as the sun dipped lower and the light turned golden, every breathless step felt worth it. The view from the summit stretched across the rolling hills and valleys, bathed in a warm, amber glow.
As I reached the top, a stillness settled. Just me, the sky, and the wind. It felt like a personal moment with nature — no crowd, no noise — only the ancient soul of the land whispering through the breeze.
🌅 Sunset Reflections
There’s something different about a sunset on the Summer Solstice.
Sunrises feel like beginnings — full of energy, light, hope.
Sunsets, especially on this night, feel sacred. A soft ending. A moment to pause and reflect as the year slowly tilts back toward winter.
It reminded me of how the Celtic people of the Borders may have once gathered on these hills, watching the same sun dip below the same horizon, marking the turning of the wheel of the year.

To witness one more sunset from this spot was a small moment in time — but one I won’t forget.

Was it worth it? Absolutely.
