Shorts – St Aebbe’s Monastery

St Aebbe was the daughter of the King of Bernicia, she founded the monastery at St Abbs (which is named after her) around 630AD.
Recent investigations have implied that the site of the monastery may be very close to the current Coldingham Priory.
But for me there is no doubt that the remote Kirk Hill on StAbbs head is the place. This is in keeping with St Columba’s remote monastery on Iona, the first Melrose Abbey, cut off from normal life on a promontory in the Tweed and of course Holy Island, Lindisfarne.
We visited the site and the foundations and ditches of the complex are still just visible…
