Standing stones near Peebles….
While browsing through old archives and illustrations of standing stones in the Scottish Borders, I stumbled upon something curious — a drawing of two mysterious stones labelled “Sheriffmuir Standing Stones.” I’d never heard of them before. But the location was marked… and you know me — I had to investigate.
🎯 Mission: Find the Stones
So, I packed up and headed out toward Peebles, following a narrow, quiet back road. This isn’t a route many people take — unless you’re heading to the old Lyne Station or you’re a local — which probably explains why these stones have remained relatively unknown.
But sure enough, just off the road, tucked quietly in a field between clusters of Scots pine trees… there they were. Two standing stones, still upright, still watching over the land. Quite prominent, in fact — if you knew where to look.
🗿 Scotland’s Forgotten Megaliths
Scotland is absolutely stuffed with ancient earthworks and megalithic monuments — and the Borders, despite their quieter reputation, are no exception. In fact, some believe this region once had more standing stones than anywhere else in the UK. The difference? Many were likely lost — destroyed, repurposed, or simply forgotten over time.
It makes you wonder how many more are still out there… standing silently in a lonely field, beside a forgotten path, with only the wind and the birds for company.

Finding these stones felt like stepping through a time portal — a reminder of a culture that honoured the land, the seasons, and possibly the stars. Nobody knows exactly why they were placed here, or what they meant. But their presence still stirs something deep.
So, if you’re ever near Peebles and fancy stepping back a few thousand years — take the road less travelled. You might just find history standing tall in a quiet field.
