I go looking for frightening False Widow spiders in an ancient ruined castle in the Scottish Borders.

It’s not every day you go spider hunting in a haunted castle.

But that’s exactly what happened when I heard whispers of venomous spiders lurking in the shadows of Elibank Castle, near Peebles. Not just any spider—the False Widow, one of the few venomous spiders now calling Scotland home.

Not Your Typical Scottish Wildlife

The False Widow (Steatoda nobilis) is a newcomer to Scotland—originally from the Canary Islands and Madeira, it crept into southern England over a century ago. And now, they’ve reached the Borders.

Cousins of the infamous Black Widow, these spiders aren’t deadly, but they are venomous. Their bite has been compared to a wasp sting, but with growing evidence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in their venom, it’s not something to take lightly.

So when someone told me there were False Widows in the basement of Elibank Castle, I had to see for myself.

Into the Vaults of Elibank

Elibank Castle is already spine-tingling on a normal day. Dark, ruined, and dripping with history—it’s not the kind of place you want to be alone.

But armed with a torch, a camera, and more nerves than sense, I descended into the vaulted dungeon.

  • Dark? Yes.

  • Damp? Soaked.

  • Haunted? Most likely.

  • Full of venomous spiders? Absolutely.

Tucked into the stonework, nesting around crevices, were dozens of False Widows. Glossy, solid-looking, and surprisingly large, these weren’t your usual spindly Scottish house spiders. Some brown, some black, some lurking near strange, hanging sacs—likely egg nests.

Face to Face with the Creepy Crawlies

I had planned to collect one in a jar for a close-up. That plan died the moment I actually saw them. These things are intimidating, and that castle vault was the last place I wanted one crawling up my sleeve.

Even a drop of water from the ceiling sent my heart racing—every shadow, every twitch of web, every creak of stone added to the atmosphere. Let’s just say, you feel every heartbeat down there.

A Real Threat or Tabloid Hype?

Experts say most bites are minor. But some are not. A few cases have involved severe swelling, necrosis, and even hospitalisation. If you’re sensitive or unlucky, it’s no laughing matter.

Their spread into colder climates is a subject of scientific curiosity. Are they evolving? Have they adapted to survive our winters? Whatever the reason, they’re here, and they’re thriving.

Check the Shadows

The idea of venomous spiders crawling around ancient Scottish castles may seem like something out of a horror film. But it’s real. False Widows are now in the Scottish Borders, and Elibank Castle won’t be the last place they appear.

So, check your sheds. Peek under the bath. Maybe even under the toilet seat. Just saying.

A Glimpse into Evolution

Beyond the fear, there’s awe. These spiders are a biological marvel—survivors, adaptors, and now, part of our ecosystem. They bring with them a reminder that nature is always moving, always shifting.

And sometimes… nature moves right into your local castle dungeon.

Final Thoughts

Whether you find them thrilling or terrifying, False Widows are here to stay. They may not be invading in numbers just yet—but keep your eyes open. They’re climbing the walls of history, one stone vault at a time.

And if you’re ever near Elibank Castle, take a torch. And maybe a spider guide.
