Bingo! A Flash of Blue in Galashiels
After ten years of sitting, waiting, hoping – I finally captured it.
A kingfisher. In Galashiels.
And not just a blur or a glimpse – but a full ten-minute posing session from the most brilliantly coloured bird in the Borders.
Honestly, it might just be the happiest day of my life.
The Hunt for a Feathered Gem
I’ve spent countless hours walking the banks of the Gala Water. Sometimes seeing nothing more than ripples. Other times – just the mocking flash of a blue tail vanishing upstream.
But something changed this time.
The river was in flood. And when the river swells, kingfishers are sometimes forced away from their usual haunts. They land in new spots, more exposed, more visible.
And there he was — perched. Proud. Unbothered.
The king of the Gala.
The Footage
There’s not much narration in the film. No need.
The bird speaks for itself – with that metallic sheen of turquoise, the sudden flick of its wings, the sharp alertness in its posture.
This wasn’t just a sighting. It was a moment.
A reward for patience, persistence, and a deep love of the rivers and wildlife of the Scottish Borders.
Why It Matters
The Gala Water isn’t the Amazon. But it doesn’t need to be.
It’s our river — and it’s full of life.
This kingfisher sighting is proof that the Borders are teeming with wonder, if you’re just still enough to see it.
Final Thought
So many people rush through Galashiels — in cars, on foot, commuting, passing through.
But if you stop by the river… and wait long enough… you might just see a streak of blue dart through your day like a living jewel.
Keep watching. Keep dreaming. The kingfisher is out there.
Keep exploring
