Privacy & cookiesThe drought conditions of 2018 have made some otherwise invisible sites come back to life.
None more dramatic or jaw-dropping than this….
The Borders has more Roman sites than Trimontium, but most of them are hidden and unknown.
In this film I go searching for a major Roman fort near Peebles.
But also I look at the difference between Roman sites near Hadrians Wall and those in the Borders…
I follow the route of Dere Street in search of Roman carved stones, which legend has it are built into a secret underground chamber.
Thanks to Richard Robbins for info on the Crichton Suterrain!
Join me as I investigate the most impressive visible remains of the Roman Empire in the Borders, perhaps even Scotland.
The view from the top of Woden Law

I am searching for a forgotten Roman fort, it’s connection to a lost Roman Legion and King Arthur.
No point tackling small subjects.

The Trimontium Trust has been telling the story of Roman settlement north of Hadrian’s Wall for more than 30 years, born from the embers of a public enquiry into a threat posed to the site of the fort by the proposed Melrose Bypass.
The enquiry, instigated by Donald Gordon, was successful in moving the course of the road and also re-awakening interest in this fascinating site and its central place within the network of Roman installations constructed during their occupation of Scotland.
The Trust was then established with a mission to advance the knowledge of Trimontium, the Romans in Scotland and the Iron Age people who were living in Scotland at the time of the Roman arrival.
The Trust is an active, wholly volunteer led organisation with a major commitment to curating and leading guided walks to the site and also delivering an active education programme to schools and the wider public centred on its museum in Melrose.
