The Tweed is never quite the same river twice. Its light, water level and wildlife change with the season, and a familiar stretch of bank can offer an unexpected encounter. In this short film Mark turns his camera on a little egret, watching its patient, precise hunt at the water's edge.

The white bird is the centre of the story, but the river matters just as much. Slow down beside the Tweed and movement appears in places that looked empty a moment earlier. This is one of the pleasures of exploring the Borders with a camera: you never know what will step into view.

Watch the river come alive

A little egret's pale plumage stands out against dark water, yet its feeding depends on careful movements rather than spectacle. Mark's encounter is an invitation to pay attention to the shallows, the margins and the small signs of life along the bank.

For another river encounter, watch Winter Wildlife on the River Tweed or salmon near Galashiels. The same water holds many different stories.
