The Burgh Flag Ceremony
The festivities begin dramatically at the Burgh Chambers as the clock strikes eight. With trumpets sounding and the Town Crier proclaiming the day’s commencement, the President entrusts the cherished Burgh Flag to the Braw Lad. Accepting the flag, he pledges its safe return, vowing to uphold the honor and traditions of Galashiels. With flag in hand, he mounts his horse and leads a grand procession joined by the Braw Lass and Attendants.
Remembering History at the Raid Stane
The first historical ceremony unfolds at Netherdale’s Raid Stane, a poignant site linked to the town’s emblem, the Sour Plums. Here in 1337, Galashiels’ townspeople courageously defeated English raiders resting under plum trees, a skirmish now symbolically remembered as the Englishman’s Syke. Today, sprigs of “Sour Plums” are ceremonially pinned onto jackets, honoring this defining moment.
Honoring Sir Walter Scott at Abbotsford
Following tradition, the cavalcade journeys to Abbotsford, home of famed novelist Sir Walter Scott. Established in 1930, this charming ritual sees the principals welcomed with roses and cordial greetings. It concludes with the Braw Lass gracefully remounting her horse from the iconic “Louping Stane” sculpture of Scott’s beloved dog, Maida.
Old Town Cross and the Union of Crowns
One of the most emotional moments is the ceremony at the Old Town Cross, commemorating the historic marriage of James IV of Scotland and Margaret Tudor, which eventually led to the Union of the Crowns. Here, symbolic acts of Sasine—the transfer of land (sod) and buildings (stone)—are recreated, with the Braw Lass ceremonially mixing red and white roses, symbolizing unity.

At midday, the mood shifts to solemn reverence during the Remembrance Ceremony at the War Memorial.
